Tugas Softskill Bahasa Inggris "ARTICLE"

THE ARTICLE

            Article is the word that in use with a nouns, especially a singular noun, so characteristic of article is used in front of or before a singular nouns or plural nouns. A noun can be countable and uncountable nouns, article belong to a group or adjective class. Article is classified into two types, they’re Definite article and Indefinite article. Definite article is an article that using the nouns indicates the obvious meaning or when the other person knows what/who we are talking about and can easily identify this person or thing. The characteristics of Definite article is using “The”, a noun with Definite article is singular nouns, so can be countable or uncountable nouns. They’re two ways to read definite that is “The” be read “dhe” so can be followed by noun which originated consonants, which begin with vowel “The” be read “dhi”. The usage of definite article that is the can be use in front of noun: the name of thing which only exist only in the world (solar system), the noun has been mentioned or the previous sentence determined, name nationally who collectively describe, the singular noun is usage for mention a group: in front of name of school (sometimes use from/at/of  before “the”), hotels, theatre, cinemas, museum, restaurants, the name of sea, canal, mountains, river, islands, the name of plural country, organization and party, proper names of book, compound word (ex:foundation,/group/ company),  weather and season (if followed by of), the top of..,the end of..,the same.. etc.

            But, in Definite article “The” can’t be use in front of : plural nouns that use in general sense, proper noun in ownership case, material noun (exception), abstract noun in general understanding except special understanding, word of “Breakfast/lunch/dinner”, television are without “The”, the name of weather, street, building/foundation if doesn’t compound word, mountain in singular mention, name of people, language, game/sport, disease, the name of colour (if use by noun), five sense, day/month, city/province and country if singular noun, the name of lake, continent, cape, organization in abbreviation, a title of profession, and expression followed by it’s object. Indifinite Article is a word that use in general sense in front of singular nouns when it doesn’t matter which particular person or thing we are talking about. A noun is countable and uncountable (exception). For article “a” we followed from originated consonants, then for article “an” is followed by vowel noun(a, i, u,e, o) not “a”, another (an + other). In general statements, article “a” and “an” are use in front of title, jobs, nationality of people, a countable nouns, when we mention something for the first time, with expressions about amount and frequency and other fixed expressions. In front of “hundred/thousand”,etc. After “as” word, “half”, “half a” is the same meaning of “a half” but “half a” is often use than “a half”, “one and a half”. In specific expression like “make a”, sentence starters in story or tale. Before uncountable nouns that sometimes in use to countable nouns. 




            Be careful with these words they’re usually uncountable in English: bread, weather, information, advice, difficulty, progress, coffee, tea, hair, furniture, papernews, money and music, etc. When we say indefinite article “a” and “an” is can’t be use for: before uncountable noun (exception). Word  of “science, language” is uncountable noun but in several case, this word can use that countable noun if the word followed by adjectives word. Before plural noun, before noun like “work, fun, health, permission, scissors, spectacles, etc”, after “kind of”or “sort of”. Before word of “ furniture, luggage, baggage, thunder, etc. In general statements, article is in front of noun, but there is several article is located before article example: all, rather, both, quite, what, just, such,much. There are several sentences that no one article is not use with uncountable noun example, fool, petrol. Article doesn’t use in genitive expressions if the first word is proper name.


Examples of  Article “The”:
· The cat, the man, the school, the house, etc. (originated consonant) be read “dhe”.
-          There’s a woman in my room. The woman is my mother.
-          The man who standing by him is my uncle.
-          Solar system which always lightning our world is the sun.
· The egg, the umbrella, the apple, etc. (vowel be read “dhi”)
-          The umbrella is mine.
-          The Indonesia have so many ethnic group in the world.
Examples of Article “a” and “an”
· Once upon a time, there’s life a princess in castle. ( followed by originated consonant use “a”)
· I bought a mobile phone last night.
· He is a Frenchman.
· She has a good life.
·  My aunt is work at PT. Berkah Jaya as a manager. ( after “as”)
·  Tania is a honest girl that i have never met before.
· I am an Indonesian. (followed by vowel use “an”)
· Ms. Susi has bought an apple in the market.
· Butterfly is a classified an insect.
· My clothes sister always neatly folded because she use an iron
· Math is an exact science.




Exercise
Some of these sentences need a/an/the.
1.      Donna has bought …. pen and pencil box.
2.      She is…Moslem in the class.
3.      Mira work half of….day because she no unexpected needs.
4.      Gold is….valuable metal.
5.      Bravery is…great virtue.
